Calls For Change In The Jewish Establishment
Looking Back and Looking Ahead

Saturday 3:00 PM–4:15 PM Tower Card room   Other sessions at this time
History/Israel/Politics
A student revolution at the 1969 General Assembly of the Jewish federation movement led to the creation of a new entity to revitalize synagogues, Jewish education, and a range of other causes. But the Institute for Jewish Life, which was to be funded with $100 million, lasted only five years on a budget of about $5 million. The story of how it came about and how it failed offers a cautionary note to today's calls for innovation within the system. Hillel Levine, then a graduate student who helped lead the revolt, and Gary Rosenblatt, a journalist who chronicled the rise and fall of the Institute for Jewish Life, will discuss its history, and the implications for today.
